How can I help ?
Sign a membership form and show you support the building of the skatepark and basketball court. Come to public meetings and show your support. Attend fundraisers to donate or support!
Will there be there handicap accessibility?
Yes. The entrances will not have stairs.
When will park open and close?
The facilities will be open from sunrise to sunset; the same as other city parks.
Will there be lights?
No.
Will there be people working there … supervised?
No.
Do kids have to sign a waiver to skate?
No.
What about vandalism?
The park will be made with resiliency in mind. FONS is also working with local groups to get all involved to minimize vandalism.
Will there be shaded areas?
Yes.
What about noise?
FONS is designing a "Green Screen" to mitigate noise.
Who is paying for it?
The City of Newport has applied for grant funds from the RI DEM for 80% of the costs associated with the basketball court project and has budgeted capital improvement funds for the remainder of the costs. However, funds for the skatepark will have to come from private sources. Friends of Newport Skatepark plans to undertake fundraising efforts upon official City Council approval.
Is there a fee to skate?
No.
Who will maintain the park?
A professional skatepark builder will be hired to undertake any necessary repairs to the skate facilities. The City of Newport will maintain the rest of the park as they do with all city parks.
Is the skate park limited to skateboards only?
This will be decided by the City of Newport.
